Campus Life on Break Hey guys, If  you decide to attend the University of Illinois, many of you at some time or another will probably have to spend at least a short amount of time on campus during non-school hours. I myself have spent a whole summer here before, as well almost an entire winter breakâ€"and let me tell you, it can get pretty dull! With Spring Break right around the corner, I thought it only made sense to bring this up now. For whatever reason, if you end up staying in the Champaign-Urbana area when most students are gone, whether for work or for classes, here are a few tips to keep yourself going until everyone comes back to campus: 1. Find a hobby. Youre going to have a lot of free time after you get off shifts or after class, and if you let the boredom get to you, youre gonna have one looooooooong break. Hit the gym, pick up a book, check out downtown Champaign, learn a skill, etc. You have to find something productive to do, else youll find yourself falling into a pattern of work, sleep, repeat, and nobody wants that. 2. Get caught up on work. I know everyone always says, This break, Im actually going to catch up on some work and before you know it, youre neck deep in popcorn and Netflix. But what if you actually did some work? I cant tell you how many times Ive come back from Spring or Thanksgiving Break and just been able to go out or relax with my friends because I got stuff done early. 3. Get out of town for a bit. If youre only in town over Spring or Thanksgiving Break, this doesnt really apply to you since its only a week. However, if youre on campus for Winter or Summer Break, my tip to you is to GO!!! Of course, you cant shirk whatever responsibility you have on campus, but every once and awhile you have to dip out, even if its just to go see your parents and get a nice, free, home-cooked meal (and get some laundry done for you). Dont be afraid, compression is our good friend for many reasons. It saves hard drive space. It makes data files to handle. It also cuts those immense file download times from the Internet. Wouldnt it be nice if we could compress all files down to just a few bytes? There is a limit to how much you can compress a file. How random the file is, is the determining factor to how far it can be compressed. If the file is completely random and no pattern can be found, then the shortest representation of the file is the file it self. The actual proof that proves this is at the end of my paper. The key to compressing a file is to find some sort of exploitable pattern. Most of this paper will be explaining those patterns that are commonly used. Null suppression is the most primitive form of data compression that I could find. Basically, it says that if you have different fields that data is in (possibly a spread sheet), and any of them have only zeros in them, then the program just eliminates the data and goes straight from the empty data set to the next. Only one step up from null suppression is Run Length Encoding. Run length encoding simply tells you how many of what you have in a row. It would change a set of binary data like 0011100001} into what the computer reads as (2)zeros, (3)ones, (4)zeros, 1. As you can see, it works on the same basic idea of finding a series of 0s (null suppression) and 1s in this case too and abbreviating them. Once the whole idea of data compression caught on, more people started working on programs for it. From these people we got some new premises to work with. Substitutional encoding is a big one. It was invented jointly by two people: Abraham Lempel and Jakob Ziv. Most compression algorithms (big word meaning roughly program) using substitutional encoding start with LZ for Lempel-Ziv. LZ-77 is a really neat compression in which the program starts off just copying the source file over to the new target file, but when it recognizes a phrase of data that it has previously written, it replaces the second set of data in the target file with directions on how to get to the first occurrence of it and copy it in the directions place. This is more commonly called a sliding-window compression because the focus of the program is always sliding all around the file. LZ-78 is the compression that most people have in their homes. Some of the more common ones are ZIP, LHA, ARJ, ZOO, and GZIP. The main idea behind LZ-78 is a dictionary. Yet it works quite a bit like the LZ-77. For every phrase it comes across, it indexes the string by a number and writes it in a dictionary. When the program comes across the same string, it uses the associated number in the dictionary instead of the string. The dictionary is then written along side the compressed file to be used in decoding. There is a combined version of LZ-77 an LZ-78. It is called LZFG. It only writes to the dictionary when it finds the repeated phrase, not on every phrase. Then instead of LZFG replacing the second set of data with directions on how to get to the first occurrence of it, the program puts in the number reference for the dictionarys translation. Not only is it faster, but it compresses better because of the fact that it doesnt have as big of a dictionary attached. Statistical encoding is another one of the new compression concepts. It is an offshoot of the LZ family of compressors; It uses basically the same style as LZFG, but instead of assigning the numbers in order that the strings come out of the source file, statistical compressors do some research. It calculates the number of times each string is used and then ranks the string with the most number of uses at the top of the hash table. The string with the least is ranked at the bottom. The Existing System For Payslip Generation The purpose of the proposed project is to automate the Payslip generation process which replaces the traditional system of Payslip generation that used to print the employee salary details onto a paper. This project includes a single user who is authorized to initiate the application. The privileges are given only to the individual in a department who is responsible for generating the PaySlips for the employees. The application takes in the Excel Spreadsheet as input and generates an encrypted PDF PaySlip for each employee. This PDF PaySlip is mailed to the respective employee by using their mail-id which is provided in the Excel sheet. This application generates PaySlips of each employee every month. The PaySlip spreadsheet is uploaded to the system. The application uses an excel parser to read this spreadsheet. The excel parser parses the excel sheet in a row-wise fashion and generates an xml string for each row. This xml string contains the salary data of each employee. The salary data is converted into a password-protected PDF document as per a pre-defined template. These salary statements (in PDF) are emailed to respective users. The email process is logged. 1.2 Existing System: The existing System for PaySlip generation includes manual entry of the pay details of all the employees in an excel sheet and converting them to word document. Each row from the excel sheet is taken and then converted into the word document. This word document contains the Pay details of the employee. This document is printed on to a paper and then distributed to all the employees. The Existing System requires manual effort in converting the excel sheet data into the word document. Tagore’s international travels also sharpened his opinion that human divisions were shallow. During a May 1932 visit to a Bedouin encampment in the Iraqi desert, the tribal chief told him that â€Å"Our prophet has said that a true Muslim is he by whose words and deeds not the least of his brother-men may ever come to any harm †¦ † Tagore noted in his diary: â€Å"I was startled into recognizing in his words the voice of essential humanity. [1] In his last decade, Tagore compiled fifteen volumes of writings, including works of prose-poems such as Punashcha (1932), Shes Saptak (1935), and Patraput (1936). He also continued his experimentations by developing prose-songs and dance-dramas, including Chitrangada (1936), Shyama (1939), and Chandalika (1938). He also wrote the novels Dui Bon (1933), Malancha (1934), and Char Adhyay (1934). Tagore also took an interest in science in his last years, writing Visva-Parichay (a collection of essays) in 1937. He wrote on topics ranging from biology to physics, and astronomy; meanwhile, his poetry — containing extensive naturalism — underscored his respect for scientific laws. He also wove the process of science (including narratives of scientists) into many stories contained in such volumes as Se (1937), Tin Sangi (1940), and Galpasalpa (1941).
